IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD ............ And the Word called forth the spirit of mission. The mission spirit took on life in praying, working, serving hands and St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church was born. This mission spirit never died. It has grown and expanded for over one hundred twenty five years. Its hands have changed only in numbers. The devotion remains ever the same. Some hands are young, eager, untried; others roughened and experienced in work. Still others are old and gnarled in their wisdom and prayerful devotion. All hands are still working together for God. In the late fall 1865 the Reverend F. H. Matter came to the Berea area from Fort Laramie, Wyoming, where he had served as a missionary to the Indians. Sent by the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa, he inquired in the community for families interested in forming a Lutheran church. On the first Sunday after New Year, 1866, fifteen families came together for the first preaching service, having rented a little Methodist Church that stood on Eastland Road near the railroad tracks, north of the site of our present cemetery.
